REv. Dr. James Ballard

Interim Pastor

 

The Reverend Doctor James Donald Ballard is a second generation preacher. He is a native of High Point, North Carolina, and a product of the public schools of that city. 

Reverend Ballard was called to ministry in 1955 and has been in ministry for sixty years. He received his ministerial training at Shaw University and Duke University Divinity School where he earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree and the Master of Divinity Degree, respectively. He was Salutatorian of his graduating class at Shaw and one of the first two African Americans to enter and graduate from Duke. Shaw University conferred upon him the honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1978.

Doctor Ballard has served on a number of boards and councils, including the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, the National Baptist Convention, U. S. A. Inc., the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and the Lott Carey Foreign Missionary Convention.

In 1965, Pastor Ballard led the First Institutional Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to merge with the West End Baptist Church of the same city to form the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church where he served as senior pastor for forty-five years, before retiring in 2004. Since retiring from the full-time pastorate, Doctor Ballard has served as Interim Pastor of the Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Raleigh, N. C. (16 months); First Baptist Church of Fuquay-Varina, N. C. (16 months); New Breed Community Baptist Church of Cary, N. C. (12 months); Apex First Baptist Church of Apex, N. C. (3 months); Baptist Grove Church, Raleigh, N. C. (20:1/2  months); First Baptist Church, Burlington, N. C. ( 18:1/2 months); Redeeming Love Missionary Baptist Church of Raleigh, N. C. (17:1/2 months); St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, N. C. (9 months); and First Baptist Church, Clinton, North Carolina (One month).

In March of 2012, Doctor Ballard published his first book entitled They, Two, Became One: The Life of a Pastor, the Birth of a Church.

Doctor Ballard has been happily married to Eleanor Pearl Adams Ballard of Apex, North Carolina for fifty-six years, and the two of them have one son, Derek Durrell Ballard, and two granddaughters, Carmen Pearl Ballard and Sara Camille Ballard.
